Emerald Tours recently returned from South Africa in preparation for our May, 2018 guided golf and game reserve safari experience we are organizing. We visited Kariega Private Game Reserve about one hour drive from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape http://www.kariega.co.za/. We spent the night at their beautiful safari lodges and went on two life changing safari guided drives. We saw the BIG 5 including elephants, lions and rhinos and many other beautiful animals that need to be protected forever. You can see our pics and videos on the Emerald Tours Golf Facebook page of our surreal visit to Kariega thanks to the hospitality of family owner Mark Rushmere. There we learned about the incredible survival and ultimately success story of Thandi the rhino after an horrific poaching attack in 2012.
Unfortunately, Kariega Game Reserve has not escaped this scourge of poaching in Africa. According to Kariega, " Rhino horn is a status symbol in Asia where the wealthy, upper class offer it as a luxury item to friends and business associates. According to Kariega experts, "It is clinically proven that rhino horn has no medical value. The horn is made of keratin, the same as human fingernails and hair. Despite this, there are still those who believe it to be a cure for a number of ailments." The poachers, who dart the rhino and then brutally hack off it’s horns with a machete, actually get paid the smallest amount for their work. The middle-man and dealers in Vietnam and China profit the most. Kareiga's website also explains that "In South Africa the government and wildlife services have been slow and somewhat ineffective in dealing with rhino poaching. They have recently allocated more resources and budget to try to address the problem, along with non-government and civil society organisations. Additionally, private game reserves have also been forced to employ full time anti-poaching units resourced with guns and other specialised tracking equipment. Many reserves, like Kariega Game Reserve, also pay for rhinos to be dehorned annually (their horns grow just like our fingernails so this needs to be done regularly). This is very expensive for the reserves and some of the costs are passed on to Kariega guests."
At Kariega, on the 2 March 2012 one cow and two bull rhino's were poached at Kariega for their horns . Tragically, one bull was fatally wounded and died during the course of the night, whilst the remaining two were severely injured, but showed an incredible will to survive. For 24 days wildlife veterinary expert, Doctor William Fowlds, worked tirelessly with the Kariega team to give these survivors the best possible care and chance for recovery. Their bravery was unbelievable and inspired our rangers to nickname them Thandi and Themba, two isiXhosa names meaning courage (or to be loved) and hope. Sadly Themba (Hope) suffered a leg injury on the night he was poached and as a result of infection passed away on the morning of the 26 of March 2012.
Thandi continues to amaze us with her incredible fighting strength and miraculous recovery. She became the first rhino to ever survive a poaching attack. Her story spread around the world and has inspired many people to get involved in rhino conservation.
Thandi endured numerous operations since her attack, including pioneering skin graft surgery under the care of Dr William Fowlds. In December 2013 blood tests after her last facial procedure revealed that she was pregnant. After waiting for many months, we were overjoyed that she gave birth to a female calf on 13 January 2015. Kariega calls the calf Thembi, meaning hope in isiXhosa.
“The name Thembi seemed to fit best given that this little calf has brought fresh hope and energy to those who struggle to secure the future of our rhino. She is a new generation of life, one I hope will never experience a poaching incident like her mother and namesake Themba,” commented Dr William Fowlds when she was named.
Thandi surprised us again in January 2017 when she gave birth to another calf. The male rhino calf was born on 24 January 2017 and named Colin in memory of the visionary and founder of Kariega, Colin Rushmere. He passed just days before the rhino was born. Here is her story:
Elephants are also being slaughtered in record numbers with one being killed in Africa every 15 minutes for their ivory tusks. Please watch the Netflix movie called the "Ivory Game". The movie really hits home bye saying " losing elephants from Africa is a slow erosion of humanity. We have a global responsibility to save these animals". Many of the elephants are slaughtered by poachers right inside the vast Kruger National Park. National Geographic reports that "Conservationists hope that the shutdown of China's legal ivory market by the end of 2017 will make it easier to crackdown on the illegal trade, both which coexist in China". We all have a responsibility to stop poaching of all precious animals in Africa. Many efforts are underway to target poachers and protect our elephants and rhinos and see them once again flourish in beautiful South Africa.
After Thandi and Themba were poached, Kariega was flooded with requests to contribute to the medical care of these two survivors. In response to this overwhelming support the Kariega Foundation created a special fund dedicated to the rehabilitation and care of rhinos. The fund is now geared more towards providing the best possible anti-poaching and protection methods possible. To support this worldwide effort, Emerald Tours pledges to donate to the Kariega Foundation 5 percent of its profits from the 2018 South Africa golf and safari tours. We also hope that other individuals and corporations will also step up and pledge their support to the Kariega Foundation to protect the rhino and elephants. As reported by the African Wildlife Foundation, "poaching is exterminating elephants from Africa's great landscapes as populations have decreased by 30 percent in the last 7 years. We are running out of time and there is a role for all of us to play."
Come with Emerald Tours to play golf and visit Kariega to experience these beautiful animals up close and personal. You will then know why we are so passionate about saving elephants and rhinos to see their numbers once again thrive throughout Africa. Please watch this video from Kariega family owner Mark Rushmere who goes on to say " getting us back in the wild (on safari) restores our soul and reminds us what life is really about."
Emerald Tours goes on Safari at Kariega Private Game Reserve Eastern Cape, South Africa while staying in 5* lodges. Check out our pics and Kariega's videos showing game drives which was a totally surreal experience. Come with Emerald to SAF in 2018.
Special thanks to our partners, Russ and Jenny Fensham for making this visit possible and we totally appreciate the hospitality of our host Mark Rushmere, family owner of this special place on this Planet! Few more details on Kariega before you watch the videos and enjoy the pics I took with Jenny of Emerald Tours. Join our May, 2018 golf and safari tour with your friends and colleagues. Once in a lifetime experience and for me, a life changing experience!

The 216-metre Bloukrans Bridge is the highest commercial bungee jump from a bridge in the world and attracts adventure-seekers from all over the globe. The bridge is found along the scenic Garden Route and has to count as one of the most spectacular bungee jumps in South Africa, if not the world.

These specialists in bungee in South Africa puts safety first with all equipment conforming to international standards and highly trained and experienced staff ensure that you get the jump of a lifetime.

Another adrenalin option, is a tour of the Bloukrans Bridge, the largest single span concrete arch bridge in the world. The tour takes you along a specially designed catwalk to the top of the arch from where you look out over the gorge to the mountains and the sea in the distance.

Jeffreys Bay is home of the best right hand surf break in the world! International surfers flock to catch the legendary waves in this, a paradise of sunshine, aloes, dolphins, shells, perfect points & classic reefs. Surfers and others who found it hard to leave such an idyllic spot have turned Jeffreys Bay into a year round fun place to be, creating a thriving local craft industry besides the surf shops on just about every corner. The bustling town is bordered on both sides by nature reserves and rivers.
We invite you join Emerald Tours on a future surf tour with some championship golf and private game reserve safari experience. We have just returned from South Africa and guarantee when you come back with us it will be a life changing experience for you! We have great travel partners in SAF who have lived in the Eastern Cape for many years and help us to put together the best adventure travel experiences ever. I know many surfers play golf. When I was working on Oahu, I visited Turtle Bay and played a round with Freddy P. about 10 years ago at the Fazio Course. We were just paired up together on the course and had a great time!
Check out these two clips on our visit to J-Bay at both Supertubes and Magnatubes. Sorry for the wind but it's Winter still in SAF. Then check out Kelly Slater's documentary series Part II called "Continuance" about his love affair with South Africa. Very cool! You need to come with Emerald Tours to South Africa! Extreme adventure in South Africa with Emerald Tours. Great white shark cage diving at Seal Island, Mossel Bay plus extreme rock and surf angling fishing. This is the real deal as we saw firsthand.
Visit to Mossel Bay, South Africa, 40 KM SE of George and Fancourt famous for great white shark cage diving off Seal Island. Mossel Bay on the Garden Route has probably the most accessible Great White Sharks in the world. The bay is very much protected in the winter months and the sea conditions are normally calm and comfortable. Seal Island in Mossel Bay is only 2km from the harbour and very close to the local beach. The ride to the island takes only 10 minutes so is ideal for people worried about sea sickness. In the summer months the boat works with the sharks on the far side of the bay which is a 20-30 minute ride and most of the days the conditions are good.
Big game sports fishing also offered here. These are add-on options when you join our South Africa golf/safari tour or wait for our totally extreme adventure tour we are now developing. South Africa is mecca for extreme adventure. Wait to see our post on world's highest bungee jumping along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth.

Sculpted into what Gary Player has described as his greatest feat as a course designer, The Links is the golfing hallmark of the Fancourt estate. Featuring an undulating, windswept terrain and dune-style landscape, the course is the collaborative handiwork of golfing icon, Gary Player, course designer, Phil Jacobs and Fancourt’s owner, Dr Hasso Plattner.
The Links is currently voted number one in the country by Golf Digest South Africa, and as number 43 in Golf Digest US edition’s list of the world’s 100 greatest golf courses, that compared 464 courses from 18 countries around the globe. Apart from its distinctive design, The Links has been lauded for its vital role in environmental sustainability and awarded a designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperation Sanctuary. AAU Junior Olympics of Golf a Huge Success with players ages 6-18 from Six Countries - Junior Golf Tournament Pics and Results
The AUU Junior Olympics of Golf tournament concluded this Friday at the beautiful Legends Golf Club, home of the Professional Golfers Career College in Temecula, CA. Weather and course conditions were excellent with sunny, warm, and dry with breezy afternoons. Junior players ages 6-18 competed over three days with representation from more than six different countries, including the US (including Hawaii), Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan and the Philippines. For the 2nd consecutive year, we were delighted to have Ron Sarracino and his Team of Native Americans with us from the Laguna Pueblo Tribe in New Mexico. Congratulations to Ron, Taylor and all the medal winners!
This tournament would not be possible without two of the best people on the Planet--Lou and Valerie Skovron of the Valley Junior Golf Association. It is amazing what they have done over the past 30 years to develop so many great young players, including Temecula's own Rickie Fowler and other PGA and LPGA players including Brendan Steele, John Mallinger and Sydnee Michaels. This year we missed Hal and Elaine Yost, Director of AAU Golf, but know they will be back with us next year in good health with even more players from around the World. Thank you again Lou and Valerie for an incredible job making this year's Junior Olympics of Golf a BIG success! Yes you are right "GOLF IS GOOD FOR KIDS!"
Congratulations to my good friends Shelly and Don Scott from Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia for bringing the largest Team even of Aussie and New Zealand players. Their commitment to developing Junior Golf players in Australia is inspiring and a great model to replicate around the World if we want to grow the game of golf and develop our young people. Here's Shelly's 3 boys who all earned medals from their great play this week, including 10 year old Aidan Scott for his gold medal and AAU plaque for lowest score in several age brackets. Also, way to go Ben for shooting 1 under par 71 in his final round in the boys 15 division! He's a few pics of the boys, Don and Shelly Scott and the Aussie Team and other medal winners from AZ and NZ.
More great pics out on the Course and with Shelly working hard at the scoring tent verifying all scores after #18.
COME JOIN US IN JULY, 2018 AS WE GROW THE TOURNAMENT TO INCLUDE PLAYERS FROM MORE COUNTRIES. NEXT YEAR'S GOLD COULD BE YOURS!
During his recent visit to his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, Emerald Tours Marketing Director Paul Tambakis stopped off in nearby Brookline to get a classic pic with Francis Ouimet and Eddie Lowery. We have Ouimet, the "father of Amateur Golf", to thank for his stunning 1913 upset victory in the US Open at the Country Club as an amateur at age 20. Lowery, his caddie, was just 10 years old! He reminds me of my days also caddying at the Country Club, but I was smaller and carried doubles!
Ouimet was the first non-Briton elected Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. THANKS FRANCIS for the greatest game every played! The Country Club in Brookline was selected to once again host the U.S. Open in 2022. Follow Emerald Tours as we take groups to play U.S. Open courses culminating with a visit to the final round at future US Opens, including: Shinnecock Hills in 2018, Pebble Beach in 2019, Winged Foot in 2020, TCC in 2022 and Los Angeles Country Club in 2023. Play in the footsteps of Legends!
