Poipu Bay was a bucket list course for me and it exceeded my expectations. The course was in great shape and the coastal views are second to none!  What a fantastic course. Especially the back nine which parallels the ocean. The course is meticulously maintained. The carts are in excellent condition and the rental clubs are good quality. They even have golf boards available if have to surf on the grass too.

Wailua: The Top Municipal Golf Course In Hawaii Is Among The Nation's Best

​The course features many small, well-guarded greens with tough spill-offs around the putting surfaces. And being right along the ocean, it can often play even harder when the wind is blowing.
Perhaps Wailua’s most dramatic hole is the par-3 17th, which plays downhill to a green flanked by the beach on the left and windblown trees behind the green. In between those impressive ocean holes, you’ll be surrounded by lush vegetation and tall coconut palms while being treated to views of Kalepa Mountain.

The golf is simply spectacular. The course opened in 1971 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., who accepted a home on the North Shore overlooking Hanalei Bay as part of his payment and to this day calls it one of the best deals he’s ever made. After undergoing a $6 million renovation and re-opening in 2010, the layout has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the Top 100 public courses in the U.S.

​Several holes into our round, the clouds had moved up toward the top of the mountain. The first few holes at Puakea wind through homes that seem to get progressively newer. And by the sixth hole, a dramatic downhill par-3 to a small green surrounded by jungle and backed by the mountain, you could be forgiven for thinking there might be dinosaurs somewhere just beyond the trees.

The golf course is as visually impressive as they come, particularly several of the closing holes that sit atop a plateau eight stories above the Pacific Ocean and are flanked by ancient stone walls.
It’s impossible to miss the emerald green mountains that provide a backdrop for many of the holes, which are also framed by palm trees and strikingly colorful bushes such as oleander and bougainvillea. That vibrant color and meticulous landscaping is part of what makes Poipu Bay so special.
